Can anyone have any advice for getting my builder to finish house after contract date?

Our builder is a month over the contract time... what can we do to get him to finish... Its hard to get tradesmen in QLD, seems like this is his problem, although he has sent us invoices, before a payment is due?Can anyone have any advice for getting my builder to finish house after contract date?
Is there a penalty clause in your contract for being late on finishing? If so, hold him to the penalty amount. Next time he send you an invoice send it back to him with instructions to finish the job before you give him another check.When I was a contractor I always set up payment schedules like this:One third up front for initial costs.One third when the job was half finished.The final third only when the owner agreed the job was done.You might have to take the contract you signed to a lawyer to straighten this matter out.
